Home Automation Wiring & Cabling

All of the power to our Home Control System (HCS) comes from our 12V UPS.

Black
A common earth that runs back to the negative terminal on our battery bank. As this is a common earth it is a thick, high current cable (56/0.30mm, 4mm², 39amp). It needs to be thick to minimise any voltage drop.
Red
Regulated +12V dc output from the 12V UPS.
Orange
Fused regulated +12V dc to temperature sensors.
Green
Alarm armed.
Green/Orange
Internal alarm.
Green/Red
External alarm.
Green/Blue
Alarm strobe.
Yellow
Twilight signal. As this is just a low current signal line a cheap, thin wire is used (7/0.20mm). This signal is also passed down all of our PIR sensor wiring, using the yellow wire in standard 6-core alarm cable.
Pink
Safety lighting.
Purple
Emergency lighting.
