This objective of this website is to inspire people who want to design and build their own stylish and environmentally friendly smart home. This site was originally a collection of research and design work but, my research work has now been moved to my Smartisant web site. I have a very broad definition of 'smart home' and it includes much more than just technology.
This site is used to document projects, capture my thinking and to document the future construction of my new smart home. I am not an eco-warrior but, I do plan to build a smart home that has minimal impact on the local environment, will handle the changes coming due to climate change, generates more energy than it uses and provides many other benefits to the surrounding area. This includes a diverse set of habitats for wildlife. I do plan to make some concessions to the materials and technologies available.
My recent experiences with my smart home solar installation project lead me to believe that my next home can be 'off grid' and this is what I am now researching.
More importantly, I want it to have a much further environmental reach than just the physical location of our new home allows, by helping to educate many other people about the materials, designs and technologies that can be used in existing homes and new house builds. I also understand that technology is just a small part of the challenge in building a sustainable home and that's why I plan to extend and widen my own knowledge as part of the process.
