Höfats Spin Review

I backed the Hoefats Spin lanterns as soon as I saw it on Kickstarter and ordered a pair. I paid €220 (plus €20 shipping) for two lanterns and two extension poles in April 2019.

In The Box

Mine finally arrived on 30th September 2019. They are a lot bigger than I was expecting! The boxes are quite heavy too and this is because of the weighted base. They are really well packed, mainly to protect the glass tube.

The first thing that hits you is just how big these things are are! I've included a standard UK pint glass and a 50 pence coin in this picture for reference.

The quality is very good and it all feels very solid.

The base is very heavy and features a threaded hole in which you screw in the bladed burner. If you don't want to use the base, you can screw the burner into an optional pole.

The heavy base has a foam underside, which is great fro protecting our glass top patio table.

A nice touch is the inclusion of an extinguishing disc, which fits on the top of the glass tube and prevents oxygen reaching the flame. It puts the latern out in just a few seconds.

When I confirmed my order, I also got the chance to add some bioethanol and I bought six 500ml tins.

This is one of my lanterns sitting on my patio table.

In Use

The Spin Lantern works really well on its base or on the pole.

The fuel can be bought from Hoefats in their online shop and six 500ml cans cost €24.95, which is a pretty good price compared to other online sources. It is cheaper to buy 1 litre refill bottles from them though and I've also bought a pair of stainless-steel refill cups to make this easier.

Summary

I'm really pleased with these garden lanterns. They work exactly as described and are very high quality. They look fantastic when lit at night and put out enough heat to feel from about 1.5m away. The cans last around 70-80 minutes of use in my experience.

Updates

June 2021

My Spin lamps are still looking like new and have been used a few times. Our British weather isn't 100% conducive to things like this though :-)
